USADF Signs fIVE gRANYS TO sUPPORT sMALL sCALE sORGHUM fARMERS IN nIGERIA:

WASHINGTON - May 13, 2010

WASHINGTON, D.C. – May 13, 2010 – The United States African Development Foundation has signed five grants in Washington, D.C. to support sorghum farmers in Nigeria. The grants will benefit Anguwar Akawu Multipurpose Cooperative Society (AAMCS), Anguwar Makama Danlawal Farmers Cooperative Society, Anguwar Sarki Dorayi Multipurpose Farmers Cooperative Society, Ikara Noma Da Kiwo Lowcost Farmers Cooperative Society (INDKLFCS), and Jidda Fadama Cooperative Union (JFCU). All five grant recipients are located in Kaduna State, Nigeria.

Upon reviewing the grants, USADF President Lloyd Pierson stated, “Funding community organizations is at the core of what USADF does.  These grants are designed to work with rural farmers meet demand and improve their quality of life while also investing in food security initiatives in the region.”

The five groups are community based organizations that are composed of resource-poor, small scale sorghum farmers. With growth in the food, beverage, and animal feed industries in Nigeria, there is an increased demand for high quality sorghum, creating market opportunities for the five farmer groups.  However, the groups are currently unable to meet market demand because of reliance on inefficient business and financial management practices and outdated production and processing techniques.

Each grantee will receive funding over a two year period.  The grants will fund land preparation activities, procurement of agricultural inputs and equipment, and training.

USADF started programming in Nigeria in 2001. Nigeria’s current portfolio stands at thirty-one investment projects totaling more than $5 million.  For more information about the portfolio, please visit the country’s quick source page at http://www.adf.gov/USADF-QuickSourceCountryPortfolioPage-Nigeria.htm .

The United States African Development Foundation (USADF) is a United States Government agency dedicated to expanding access to economic opportunities to the most marginalized populations in Africa. Currently USADF operates in 20 African countries. Over the past 25 years, USADF has funded in excess of $200 million in African initiated and led development projects.  For more information on USADF, its programs and application guidelines, visit www.usadf.gov .
