The Foundation has been active in Uganda since the early 1990s. Today, Uganda’s program focus is on the following areas:
- West Nile (defined as then Districts of Arua, Koboko, Yumbe, Adjumani, Nebbi);
- Northern Region (defined as then Districts of Kitgum, Lira, Pader, Gulu);
- Karamoja (defined as then Districts of Moroto, Kotido and Abim);
- and areas bordering the Republic of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (especially the Districts of Kisoro and Kanungu).
These regions have suffered from successive civil wars, rebel activities, and cattle rustling especially in Karamoja. There has also been loss of jobs due to historical factors and following successive military takeover of successive government regimes and subsequently replacing then armed forces. The consequences of armed conflicts are displacement of people on a large scale, and loss of livelihoods. In Western Nile, the only cash crop is tobacco which in itself is a cause of deforestation and soil degradation as smallholder farmers do not apply fertilizer to their farms. In the traditional Northern Region people are just being resettled after living for over 22 years in Internally Displaced People’s Camps characterized by subhuman conditions. In Karamoja, the people are pastoralists who are nomadic by nature and therefore do not have permanent habitats. Also, the semi arid nature of Karamoja region, the poor infrastructure, the high rate of illiteracy, and the hostility of the Karamojong to foreigners has denied the region of both Government and private sector investments. The South Western Border areas of Uganda suffer from a hostile environment (poor soils and a mountainous terrain), lack of water, and limited sources of livelihood.
